97, 98, 99—these are some of the highs the Canadian dollar reached against the U.S. greenback at various times this year. And there doesn’t seem to be any relief in sight. The good news is that many of our small and mid-sized exporters are confronting the dollar dilemma head on.

Understandably, the high dollar is still a big concern for Canadian companies. EDC’s Online Research Panel recently found that 42 per cent of some 400 Canadian companies polled said the strong dollar had a big influence on their business. Interestingly though, only half of those companies saw their sales decline. The rest still experienced growth despite the dollar daze.

In other words, many other factors affect the currency’s power over your business, such as the type of product you sell, how price-sensitive it is, the sector you’re in, and general economic conditions. No matter what, playing the blame-game won’t get anyone’s sales back on track. Here are three key strategies that successful companies use to combat a high dollar.
